Update on decision on how to handle Quest message transmission with PID-7 (DOB)

  • Quest confirmed:

    • Rare instances of missing DOB

    • Required field for labs to populate, if truly unknown, must populate with “not given” or “unknown”

    • If missing, Quest continues to make every attempt to reach the providers for any missing data, while avoiding any delays in processing

    • IF a test is time critical, the results can get released but can fail. They are then placed in a bucket to be re-queued until the PHC can obtain the DOB

    • Quest working to develop a process to notify PHA’s of unsuccessful attempts if they are unable to send the message - TBD

  • AIMS Integration confirmed:

    • PID-7 = RE field

    • Patient DOB is required in HL7 v2.5.1, but AIMS does allow field to be blank

  • Poll results:

    • Majority states require field to be blank

    • Multiple states requesting individual customization – not sustainable

Decision PID-7 (DOB): IF not included, in rare instances, leave as blank. Rationale:

  • Majority requires blank

  • Minimizes development/customization at a broad scale

  • Avoids excessive long-term support/logistical resource management

    • In rare instances, if DOB is missing/blank, this will continue to process through AIMS

  • States to manage through internal error process/workflow

    • Confirm review of valid results

    • Contact/Submit Quest support ticket if/when applicable

Continuing conversation on PID-10 and PID-22.

Following the 8/22 call, we asked if jurisdictions could accept the following values to denote Unknown Race and Ethnicity: UNK (Yes/No); ASKU (Yes/No)

Summary report of feedback so far:

  • Most (12/14) could take UNK for PID-10 (if cannot be blank).

  • Fewer 7/14 could take ASKU for PID-10 (if cannot be blank).

  • If cannot currently accept these values, but could adapt to accept, jurisdictions would need enough lead time to make necessary changes in system.

Opportunity to provide feedback still open, especially if UNK or ASKU would absolutely NOT work for you!
